June Bank Holiday Date: June 6
June Bank Holiday
The June Bank Holiday replaced the holiday known as Whitsuntide, a moveable feast depending on what day Easter fell. Pentecost, a Christian festival commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit to the apostles, became known as White Sunday because it was a very popular day for baptism and so was associated with white clothing. The name contracted to Whit Sunday and the following day, Whit Monday, was a holiday. Although the bank holiday has now replaced Whitsuntide and the weekend doesn’t fall on the same weekend as the Church’s dates, some people still refer to this bank holiday as the Whit Weekend. Pentecost falls on June 12 this year.
